The client, a medical imaging device company has an impressive history of product innovation and excellence in the field of ultrasound. The client possesses an impressive pool of experience and expertise in hardware and physics, manufacturing and quality. Software has always been treated as an adjunct capability, and the client never invested in creating software in house skills. As a result, the software side of the scanner is rudimentary and lacking features and functionality. Moreover the client doesn’t have the resources or knowledge base to solve this problem.
Solution
The client engaged with Biotronics3D to develop the visualisation and user front end part of the scanner. Biotronics3D immediately understood what was needed and showed them several advanced software frameworks focused on medical imaging that can be used to build prototypes and families of products. The client realised that by deploying one of those frameworks, the risk and time to market could be significantly reduced and agreed to a pilot project – a new console application for the company’s latest scanner. The project went well, but three months into development, the client was forced to change the technical specifications of the scanner with direct impact on the software product roadmap. That immediately put the project at risk. Biotronics3D immediately identified the risk and implemented a resilience strategy: to mitigate the risk, the communication between the two companies had to be increased. Biotronics3D immediately sent two senior engineers to work at the client’s factory for 2 months. As a result, five months later, the project was back on track.

As a result, the client has gone from strength to strength, and the scanner is still their most profitable product line. Biotronics3D has produced two minor updates to the software and one major upgrade over the last year.
